If you’re a pet parent who loves to camp, you may have thought of bringing your pup along. Although many campsites and parks allow pets, it can be challenging to find parks that offer good amenities for human and dog alike. So, we’ve put together a list of a few lesser-known parks that are both pet- and pet-parent-friendly to consider for your next getaway.
Acadia National Park, Maine
Acadia National Park on the coast of Maine is the oldest national park east of the Mississippi River, but because of its somewhat remote location and small size it is not among the best-known parks. Acadia National Park is open to leashed pets and has more than 100 miles of hiking trails open to dogs, as well as three pet-friendly campgrounds. There are also swimming opportunities in certain lakes. The park maintains a list of pet-friendly trails and other guidelines on its website.
Lake of the Ozarks State Park, Missouri
Lake of the Ozarks State Park is a popular weekend spot for Missourians, but it also makes a good camping spot for visitors from out of state. The park centers around the Lake of the Ozarks, a large reservoir in central Missouri, and it participates in the Cabins for Canines program, a Missouri parks policy which allows for dogs in certain cabins throughout the state. The park offers pet-friendly camping at its Outpost Cabins, a set of rustic cabins set in an oak-hickory forest. The park offers twelve trails—one of which runs closely by the Outpost Cabins—and lots of opportunities for fishing and boating on the lake.
Seminoe State Park, Wyoming
Seminoe State Park lies between Laramie and Rock Springs in southern Wyoming, between the Seminoe Mountains and the Seminoe Reservoir, and offers several tent campsites as well as day use areas. The park is best known for fishing and boating due to the proximity of the reservoir and two rivers that feed into it. It also offers hiking in sites of great natural beauty, though the hikes are more rugged, so it is probably best suited for fit dogs who are used to hiking.
Saint Croix State Park, Minnesota
Saint Croix State Park is the largest of Minnesota’s sixty-seven state parks at over 30,000 acres located on the Wisconsin border between Minneapolis and Duluth. It is also bordered by two state forests, providing space for endless exploration with your pup. The park features two rivers with fishing for game fish including trout and bass, as well as over 100 miles of hiking trails, some of them paved. In winter, many of the trails are suitable for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, both activities that could be great with an active, snow-loving dog.
Olympic National Park, Washington
Located on the Olympic Peninsula across the Puget Sound from Seattle, Olympic National Park has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its beauty and preservation. The large park includes coastal portions, the Olympic mountains, and large areas of old-growth forest. Although pets are not allowed in the most remote wilderness of the park, several wonderful trails and beaches are good options for hikes or water play with your pup, and dogs are also allowed on trails in the nearby Olympic National Forest.
