National Pet Day

The pet-owning population in the United States increased to a level that is virtually unprecedented, at 68%. This translates to 84.6 million pet-owning households out of the total 124.587 million United States households! (APPA, 2017).

These numbers don’t lie; people love their pets! Today is National Pet Day. The day was created to celebrate the joy pets bring to us and create awareness of all the lovable pets looking for their forever home. So what’s stopping you from becoming a pet parent? What are the benefits of being a pet parent? What are the drawbacks?

Becoming a pet parent is a huge responsibility. You must feed them, provide shelter and love them day in and day out, but the best part about this, is that they’ll love you back. The American Pet Product Association Surveyed dog and cat parents on the benefits and the drawbacks of being a pet parent, and the results matched.

Both dog and cat parents perceived the number one benefit to having a pet was for the companionship, love, company and affection they have for their furry friends. The leading drawback for being a pet parent, however, is when the pet passes away. The drawback is inevitable, but the memories and time spent together will last a lifetime

Enjoy each day with your furry friend, and cherish every moment. If you’re thinking of becoming a pet parent, please visit your local animal shelter. You’ll be surprised how much love a cat or dog can show you, and how much love you have for them.

“When we adopt a dog or any pet, we know it is going to end with us having to say goodbye, but we still do it. And we do it for a very good reason: They bring so much joy and optimism and happiness. They attack every moment of every day with that attitude.” – Bruce Cameron
